‘Mercy’

The Mill of Kintail in the previous post also houses works of  famous sculptor R. Tait Mackenzie, a childhood friend of Naismith. They include the bronzed plastic Madonna-like ‘Mercy.’ The completed statue in bronze stands in the headquarters of the American Red Cross in Washington D.C. in honour of the 296 American nurses who died in the First World War. Also in the collection at the mill is Mackenzie’s Scottish- American War Memorial, known  as “The Call 1914″‘

Thought this would be appropriate with the first NBA All-Star game taking place outside the U.S. tomorrow. Especially since the inventor of Basketball, James Naismith, was born in Almonte, a few miles west of Ottawa.
The best part of my high school years in Moose Jaw was playing basketball . If it wasn’t for Naismith I, and obviously millions of other kids, wouldn’t have known the joy of playing the indoor winter game. Earlier this month, Bruce Heyman, the U.S. Ambassador to Canada, was among a group that visited the Naismith Museum at the scenic Mill of Kintail on a country road 8 kms west of Almonte.
